In conversation with e-bike guide Fabian
E-biking has long been a genuine trend sport in the Alps. E-bike guide Fabian Kikl told us why that is, what to bear in mind, and shared plenty of other practical tips.
E-bikes are becoming more and more popular. Why is that?
Fabian: It's certainly because e-biking is suitable for absolutely everyone. Fitness and age don't play a particularly big role, because thanks to the various modes – Eco or Turbo, for example – the level of assistance adapts to the rider. That means even steep sections can be mastered easily by the whole family, which makes it ideal for alpine regions like Seefeld.
What should you look out for in terms of equipment?
Fabian: Safety comes first, so the e-bike and helmet should be in perfect condition. Alongside high-quality helmets, the Alpin Resort Sacher offers its guests state-of-the-art e-bikes from the German brand Conway. These are regularly maintained and serviced for maximum comfort and safety. You should also always carry enough water and a small snack in your rucksack. On my guided e-bike tours we always take a break and stop somewhere for refreshments.
And what about clothing?
Fabian: Good footwear is especially important. A stiff sole that is still flexible enough for walking is ideal. Gloves provide a better grip and offer protection in the event of a fall. A rain jacket and windproof layer are also essentials for your rucksack. Sunglasses and sun cream are likewise recommended.
Is there a special warm-up, or can you simply set off?
Fabian: Beginners should first get used to the e-bike and master the right technique. Key factors on every tour are your own motivation, a realistic assessment of your abilities and careful route planning. The route should be matched to the battery range and also take charging options into account. As an e-bike guide, I also prepare every participant thoroughly. That includes a health check and a detailed route briefing. If necessary, I adapt the tour individually to suit the guests.
What are the most beautiful e-bike routes in the Olympiaregion?
Fabian: The Gaistal valley and the Karwendel offer countless wonderful tours. The Seebensee is another of the many beautiful routes that can be thoroughly enjoyed by e-bike. I'm always happy to show guests my personal secret spots on one of my guided tours.
Finally, do you have a tip for our readers on how to extend battery life?
Fabian: There are a few ways to get more range, for example by maintaining an optimal cadence. Our e-bikes have the latest generation of batteries and easily manage a full day tour. You'll get more tips during one of my tours. From Monday to Saturday I accompany guests to the most beautiful spots in the Olympiaregion – I'm already looking forward to it.
